Statement
Limbic Slang represents a duality of place and energy, including both mixed media works made during graduate school in Boston and paintings from the last six months in Nashville. All works in this show were made at some point in the last two and half years. As one who makes, I rely on a cyclical, ebbing awareness of myself and where I am. The arc that runs through the made is an attempt to describe presence through process and gesture. Collage, photo, and poetry have introduced a sharper focus, a shift in textures and surfaces, and a resulting color scheme that harkens to a personal, physical, and momentary place.
While dichotomies rule my practice—activity and rest; observation and invention— a sneaky reel of figures and accessories has emerged. Both the open landscape and private interiors set an optimal stage for exploring a kind of limbic twist in perception. Shadows spread across the floor, ground, and walls, forming a subconscious container for memory, light, and weight. The angular pattern cast from my studio window echoes the wavy grid of the quilted fabric paintings. Illuminating these vibrations of color and light connects me to my own temporality and fragility. Painting them honors felt repercussions with a type of slowness. In a search for language to express both personal and collective growing pains, imprecision or slang seems to offer a fitting, impulsive language for the moment I see in front of me.
